I have been doing hair since I was 20. I went to cosmetology school and began salon work that year and was out freelancing by 23. I have met a lot of people along the way. During my apprenticeship I was told one sentence that has never left me, "the beauty industry can be very ugly." Since then, that ugliness is unfortunately something I have witnessed. From other stylists trying to steal my clients to mothers seeking the spotlight on their daughter's big day, I have seen a surprising amount of dirty deeds go down since I got my start in the beauty industry. My job when I work weddings and events is to be a comfort to my client and to make their vision of themselves on that day come true. Essentially I aim to have fun with them but also blend into the background. Thankfully in my career my positive experiences have far outweighed the negative. I have learned that in this industry if I don't want to be a part of the ugly, I simply need to put a hand up and say, "no thanks." As a result along the way I have met some truly amazing people. I have the pleasure of being chosen by a group of women that are not just clients but have become lifelong friends. Vanessa is one of those women, an outstanding person all the way through and a favorite client of mine. When she reached out to me about her June 10 year wedding anniversary it was actually six months in advance. See, Vanessa is a planner. This girl had her earrings, hairstyle, outfit ideas all in the works in JANUARY. When Vanessa is around "getting sh*t done," is in the air, and I absolutely love it. She also happens to be one of the sweetest people I know. Needless to say the day of her anniversary I arrived about 30 minutes early to her suite at the Colonnade, because honestly it's hardly working when I spend time with her, the laughs do not stop. When I finished her hair her reaction reminded me why I am so in love with my career. After all, if you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life. It felt like a day off to me.
